Performing Arts

The therapists at CHPT understand the needs and requirements of performing artists. We work extensively with student, professional, and recreational musicians and dancers, as well as their teachers.

Caring for the Performing Artist of Every Level

The therapists at CHPT understand the needs and requirements of performing artists. We work extensively with student, professional, and recreational musicians and dancers, as well as their teachers. During treatment for an injury (Performance Related Musculoskeletal Disorder), we provide strategies to prevent further strains, sprains or overuse so that you can return to optimal performance as soon as possible.  Often times after physical therapy intervention, you will find yourself performing with greater ease and less fatigue, what we refer to as performance enhancement.

Dancers from Rochester City Ballet, Garth Fagan Dance, FuturPointe Dance,  Park Avenue Dance and other Rochester-based companies come to us when they are in need of skilled physical therapy. We work closely with each dancer, knowing their unique issues and using an approach much different than used in sports medicine. That’s because our therapists all have training in dance or dance medicine and can speak in terms of demi plié and port de bras instead of squats and arm lifts!

Musicians also benefit from our performing arts backgrounds. We treat teachers as well as students from area public and private schools, including Hochstein Music School and the Eastman School of Music. Professionals from the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and chamber groups are also included in our list of patients.

We treat a variety of issues common to performing artists, including sprains and strains, overuse injuries like tendinitis and tendinopathies.

Dancer Wellness and Injury Prevention Workshops. CHPT offers workshops on injury prevention and performance enhancement for area dance and music teachers and their students. CHPT therapists teach workshops at Garth Fagan Dance Summer Movement Institute, Nazareth College and U of R Dance Festivals. We have created Dancer Wellness Workshops, which we have presented for teachers as well as in-studio workshops for local dance teachers and their students. For musicians, CHPT staff  presented similar material at the University of Rochester's Day of Brass and International Viola Conference held at Eastman School of Music as well as for studio classes.
For information on hosting a workshop for your students or colleagues, contact us by clicking here or calling 585-482-5060.

We also are the recommended physical therapist with Stage Call, a service provided to area theatrical organizations. We have worked with cast members from Geva Theatre Center, touring shows at the Auditorium Center including The Phantom of the Opera presented by Rochester Broadway Theatre League, and shows at the Blue Cross Arena. In addition, we provide backstage services to Rochester City Ballet at their annual performances of The Nutcracker and their spring performances.
