At CHPT, we take an eclectic approach to the treatment of spinal pain. Experience has taught us that no single school of thought addresses all spinal conditions. Therefore, we offer a blend of evaluation and treatment strategies. These include the McKenzie approach, the Osteopathic approach, mobilization/manipulation and exercise. This blended approach helps us to manage varied spinal conditions such as herniated discs, spinal instability (ie spondylolisthesis), muscle spasms, postural syndromes, headaches, arthritis and whiplash injuries.
You will be scheduled for an hour-long evaluation that includes approximately 30 minutes of specific questions about your spinal pain history and, as tolerated, 30 minutes of objective tests. These tests are designed to help us determine what treatment strategies would be most beneficical for your individual problem.
Research continues to find that the most effective treatment for spinal pain includes manual therapies that help to speed along your recovery, combined with a carefully fashioned exercise program that is specific to your problem. Netiher exercise nor manual therapies alone is as effective as a combined approach. We place strong emphasis on the value of your home exercise program. Your commitment to perform your home exercises is what ultimately relieves your pain and addresses the underlying muscle imbalances that perpetuate it.
Manual therapies include Muscle Energy, joint mobilization/manipulation, connective tissue/massage work and trigger point release.
Therapeutic exercises include core stabilization, neuromuscular reeducation, McKenzie exercises, stretching and strengthening exercises, cardiovascular training and postural reeducation.
Although we may supplement treatment with modalities (such as ultrasound, electrotherapies, heat and cold), we mainly rely on the power of manual therapies and exercise to effect a lasting change and to return you to optimal function.
